This gives you a good measure of how the companies actually deliver on their advertised services. Slightly less reliable are the “complaint” or consumer report sites. Most of the people who put up reports are motivated by revenge. They have had poor service and want the world to know about it. Many commercial sites that depend on commission by selling auto insurance add their own “better” reports to balance out the bad. Read both good and bad with a skeptical eye. When you have rated the auto insurers, decide which one gives you the best value terms and buy.

It’s easy to drift through life assuming everything will turn out right. Life has been good to everyone growing up over the last twenty years. Baby boomers get to be seniors at last

As the boomer generation has aged, every part of the social system has had to bend to fit them all in. First it was the school system, then higher education. Were there going to be jobs for them all? Now, those who have survived the march of time, are finally approaching retirement making the sale of health insurance a much more competitive market. We caught up with Dave in Oakland and asked how he was preparing for his retirement. He managed a harassed smile. He was pitched into medical insurance that would give him cover outside the US. He said he passed the time bugging local agents to give him chapter and verse on all the policies. “Guess I was a little lonely so I did a lot of research.” Then the stock markets went south and all his plans changed. “I’ve been looking more carefully at Medicare. The cover’s not so bad, so I’m looking at policies to top up the cover to get the best budgeted treatments whenever possible.” He smiled. “I’ve been doing the round of the same agents. Boy, were they pleased to see me again.” We talked about whether he was using the internet. “I’ve been following the AARP’s campaign, Divided We Fail, and their plans for an HMO for Medicare folk like me look interesting. I’ve been using the online sites to get quotes as well. It’s more effort because not all of them are set up to do specialized cover for the elderly, but there’ve been some interesting quotes.”

How much is enough?

It’s a sad fact that auto insurance is a boring subject. The only reason we tolerate it is that all but three states in the union have passed laws requiring us to have it. Were it not for that, we would all just let it die.

Since agents earn a commission on the sale of policies, this is not a surprising opinion. So it comes down to a simple rule. If you have a choice, you don’t need to top up your minimum liability policy if you don’t have assets to protect. Let’s say you live in a rental apartment with few items of furniture and no savings in the bank. If you get involved in a traffic accident, there’s no point in chasing you for money.

How much will $10,000 buy if two other vehicles are involved in the same traffic accident? Now let’s go to Maine. Here the minimum is to carry $50,000 for one person injured. If two or more are injured, they share $100,000 to (hopefully) cover their medical expenses. The minimum for property damage is $25,000. These are slightly more realistic figures but, when you add in all the possible claims for consequential and incidental losses, both sets of numbers are inadequate.

If you were to ask an agent for one of the auto insurance providers, he or she would tell you that you can’t have too much insurance.

Growing pains

Parents always say they never regret having their kids. It kind of goes with the territory. Love conquers all (eventually). But whilst you’re living through it all, it seems like you’re struggling from one crisis to the next. Like when they first learn to drive. Despite your better judgement, you let them drive the family car. Later you buy them something to run around in. But, when they’re starting off, you add them to your own auto insurance policy (and say prayers).

They talked over the problem with their agent. “He was kinda laid back about it all,” Joan said with a smile.
“He warned us that kids always have a run of accidents. Ours were no exception.”
Frank leaned over to interrupt. “It was a bad two or three years. Everytime they went out, we never knew whether they would come back in one piece.”
Joan was nodding in agreement. “We found ourselves turning to Christ more often. We had the Pastor bless the cars when the kids weren’t around and held prayer sessions on a regular basis. There were five small fender benders. Nothing too serious, and never a scratch on the kids.”

“Praise the Lord!” Joan’s smile of relief said it all.
“And every time the auto insurance came round for renewal we were expecting a hike. But the company held the line.”
“It was all down to the agent who showed us how to get the discounts to keep everything smooth until they could get policies of their own at good premium rates.”
Later, there were all the worries about dropping out of college, surprise pregnancies and marriages. But that’s another story. This one says find a good auto insurance agent who can help you through the teenage years. Other than that, trust in the Lord to see you through.
