Has it occurred to you that it’s not very fair when insurance companies start poking around your life. They want to know how well you drive your vehicle, what you have in your home worth protecting, how likely you are to fall sick and, most cheerfully, when you think you’re going to die. There’s no part of your life they don’t investigate and build into their models for deciding how much to charge you as a premium in your latest policy. Are these companies financially strong? Will they still be around in a few years time to pay on your claims? You want to choose the best company to insure you whether it’s auto, home, health or life insurance. Why bother? Look around you. Banks and large insurance companies like AIG have been getting bailouts from the federal government. Checking out the financial strength of an auto insurance company is necessary before you start paying them your hard-earned dollars. So where do you look? Some are general. You should also find the website operated by the Insurance Department or Commissioner of Insurance for your own state. The best states not only operate a complaints service, but publish an annual report identifying all the companies against whom complaints have been upheld. This gives you a good measure of how the companies actually deliver on their advertised services. Slightly less reliable are the “complaint” or consumer report sites. Most of the people who put up reports are motivated by revenge. They have had poor service and want the world to know about it. Many commercial sites that depend on commission by selling auto insurance add their own “better” reports to balance out the bad. Read both good and bad with a skeptical eye. When you have rated the auto insurers, decide which one gives you the best value terms and buy.

Auto insurance quotes may seem elusive, especially the free ones. But there are reasons why you should take the time to get plenty of quotes. Having an understanding about what your driving record and type of car you drive will cost you as far as benefits go will allow you to make a better decision. If you are a student, you can save money for good student driving discounts. Well, you just might find that you have the higher insurance quotes. This is not terrible as there are always ways to lower your rates. By paying all your fines, driving better, avoiding parking tickets, and paying the premium in advance, you will lower your rates and cut your costs. With that, auto insurance companies take a good look at everything and will give you higher or lower auto insurance quotes depending on everything possible. Start your search for your auto insurance now.

SOHO stands for Small Office, Home Office and it’s used to refer to people who work from home (sorry it’s a boring explanation). With the cost of business premises still high even though the housing market is in free fall, it’s natural to base start-ups in the spare room and the garage for storing inventory. With computers, people can easily work from home. Employers cut their expensive office overheads by having their full-time staff telecommute. The self-employed freelance or run e-commerce sites. Unfortunately, most people never think about home insurance. Let’s deal with your boss offering you the chance to work from home. That’s great for you, saving all that money in gas or bus fares to travel to work. But if your boss gives you a computer, router and other office equipment, make sure the business insures it all. If not, you’re likely to find a burglary expensive. Your home insurance probably doesn’t cover any property belonging to someone outside the immediate family. So who’s going to pay for all the missing kit? The answer is to add an endorsement to your existing policy and to pass the additional cost on to your boss (you can sell this because your personal endorsement will be less than the business insurance cost). If it’s your own business, how much is all your equipment and inventory worth? Even if some of the value is covered under your home policy, there’s almost certainly no cover if you take any of it outside the home. Worse, there’s no liability cover so if anyone is injured whilst dealing with your business, you’ve just discovered the joys of self-insurance. You’ll be pleased to know there are options. If your own business is small scale, add an endorsement to your policy (sometimes called permitted incidental occupancies). It’s more expensive but, because it offers strong liability cover against all claims for loss caused by the operation of your business, it pays for itself in the long run. You can use online quotes to find the best homeowners insurance for your needs.

All the figures show the number of parents who don’t insure their children is rising. The reasons are all financial. The reality is that rising medical costs are now making it difficult for even middle class families to pay for health insurance. Gordon and Mary are typical. They have two children. Gordon is self-employed as an electrical contractor. Work’s been pretty good with the boom in housing. Mary works as a legal secretary. They were comfortable until the housing bubble burst and contracting work dried up. He’s been doing odd jobs but their income has dropped to the point when there’s barely enough for the mortgage and food on the table. “The health insurancehealth insurance was the first thing we cut. That and selling the second car to pay off the credit cards.” Gordon was finding it hard to talk about it, so Mary took up the running. “We were embarrassed. Didn’t want to tell anyone we were having financial problems.” She looked round their home with pride. “We worked hard for all this. . . We tried to keep up appearances.” “When Doug, that’s our youngest got sick, we didn’t know what to do for the best. Mary wanted to go down to the Emergency Room at the first sign of trouble but, like I said, it wasn’t an emergency. Not at first.” “In the end, I asked at work. It was a real benefit to be working for an attorney who cared. I became an instant expert on the Balanced Budget Act of 1997. With two uninsured kids under 19, we qualified under the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). We were able to get both kids covered and Doug got the treatment he needed before things got too serious for him.” At least Mary had someone to ask. No matter what your situation, you should never let pride get in the way of your responsibility to your children. There are plenty of people and agencies around to ask. Remember, if you don’t ask for help, you never get any.

It’s easy to drift through life assuming everything will turn out right. Life has been good to everyone growing up over the last twenty years. So when your kids went through the admission process for your local college, they probably looked at the question about medical insurancemedical insurance and ticked the box that said your family plan continued cover. They never gave it a second thought. Melanie was such a student. But it turned out Dad hadn’t read the small print. The policy had a term requiring the children to leave their parent’s policy when they graduated from high school. The company had a special policy for health insurance for college students. “So there I was trying out for the cheerleaders. Going for a big move, I slipped and fell awkwardly. Twisted my knee real bad. Not being like the girl in Heroes, that meant an ambulance to the emergency room. Called my Dad on the way. He came over only expecting health problems. Turns out, he had to pay for all the treatment on his credit card.” When it comes to your children’s health, it’s not worth taking risks. If they fall sick and don’t have cover, they may not get treatment early enough. Always read your current policy carefully. Don’t be taken by surprise. Shop around for medical insurance on the internet. There are many economical policies aimed at the student market both for university and doctoral courses that can take some of the worry off your shoulders when they leave the nest and go live on campus.

As the boomer generation has aged, every part of the social system has had to bend to fit them all in. First it was the school system, then higher education. Were there going to be jobs for them all? Now, those who have survived the march of time, are finally approaching retirement making the sale of health insurance a much more competitive market. We caught up with Dave in Oakland and asked how he was preparing for his retirement. He managed a harassed smile. He was pitched into medical insurance that would give him cover outside the US. He said he passed the time bugging local agents to give him chapter and verse on all the policies. “Guess I was a little lonely so I did a lot of research.” Then the stock markets went south and all his plans changed. “I’ve been looking more carefully at Medicare. The cover’s not so bad, so I’m looking at policies to top up the cover to get the best budgeted treatments whenever possible.” He smiled. “I’ve been doing the round of the same agents. Boy, were they pleased to see me again.” We talked about whether he was using the internet. “I’ve been following the AARP’s campaign, Divided We Fail, and their plans for an HMO for Medicare folk like me look interesting. I’ve been using the online sites to get quotes as well. It’s more effort because not all of them are set up to do specialized cover for the elderly, but there’ve been some interesting quotes.”

It’s a sad fact that auto insurance is a boring subject. The only reason we tolerate it is that all but three states in the union have passed laws requiring us to have it. Were it not for that, we would all just let it die.

Since agents earn a commission on the sale of policies, this is not a surprising opinion. So it comes down to a simple rule. If you have a choice, you don’t need to top up your minimum liability policy if you don’t have assets to protect. Let’s say you live in a rental apartment with few items of furniture and no savings in the bank. If you get involved in a traffic accident, there’s no point in chasing you for money.

How much will $10,000 buy if two other vehicles are involved in the same traffic accident? Now let’s go to Maine. Here the minimum is to carry $50,000 for one person injured. If two or more are injured, they share $100,000 to (hopefully) cover their medical expenses. The minimum for property damage is $25,000. These are slightly more realistic figures but, when you add in all the possible claims for consequential and incidental losses, both sets of numbers are inadequate.

If you were to ask an agent for one of the auto insurance providers, he or she would tell you that you can’t have too much insurance.

Parents always say they never regret having their kids. It kind of goes with the territory. Love conquers all (eventually). But whilst you’re living through it all, it seems like you’re struggling from one crisis to the next. Like when they first learn to drive. Despite your better judgement, you let them drive the family car. Later you buy them something to run around in. But, when they’re starting off, you add them to your own auto insurance policy (and say prayers).

They talked over the problem with their agent. “He was kinda laid back about it all,” Joan said with a smile.
“He warned us that kids always have a run of accidents. Ours were no exception.”
Frank leaned over to interrupt. “It was a bad two or three years. Everytime they went out, we never knew whether they would come back in one piece.”
Joan was nodding in agreement. “We found ourselves turning to Christ more often. We had the Pastor bless the cars when the kids weren’t around and held prayer sessions on a regular basis. There were five small fender benders. Nothing too serious, and never a scratch on the kids.”

“Praise the Lord!” Joan’s smile of relief said it all.
“And every time the auto insurance came round for renewal we were expecting a hike. But the company held the line.”
“It was all down to the agent who showed us how to get the discounts to keep everything smooth until they could get policies of their own at good premium rates.”
Later, there were all the worries about dropping out of college, surprise pregnancies and marriages. But that’s another story. This one says find a good auto insurance agent who can help you through the teenage years. Other than that, trust in the Lord to see you through.
